DCC asks State of Alaska to deny Herbicide Permits to Alaska Railroad
We submitted comments today to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation asking that they deny permit requests from the Alaska Railroad to spray on more than 120 miles of track in three different locations. Our arguments centered around the risks associated with the chemicals themselves and the inadequacy of proof that such a need exists from the Alaska Railroad. We also regret the piecemeal cobbling together of these permits, after a system-wide permit request failed in 2006. We’d prefer a collaborative process involving all stakeholders to assess the entire system together and pick site-specific solutions from a wide range of non-chemical alternatives.
