Finally for today - in an echo of the assault on the natural world emanating from Washington, the Mat Su Borough Planning Commission last night approved the conditional use permit for the new campground/store/helipad in Denali State Park across from the K'esugi Ken campground. The only amendment? They deleted the limitations on helicopter landings - so there are no restrictions on the numbers of landings, frequency, or flight paths. They took this action despite a report from staff telling them that of 103 public comments received on the project, 102 opposed the helipad which was reinforced by several locals citizens speaking at the meeting. Speaking of more substantive actions, another Executive Order from the Trump administration targeted Alaska in general, including several issues DCC has been involved in including revoking the new Preserves hunting rule, supporting the LNG pipeline from the North Slope, and reviewing navigable waterways with the goal of transferring ownership interest to the state. Plus the EO takes on the Ambler Road, King Cove Road, and lots of north slope oil issues. Most of it is really just a statement of intent since the president cannot - for instance - just revoke a regulation with an EO. Still, it is sad to have to re-run a lot of these battles. Well, the new federal administration has begun with some executive orders targeting Alaska. While many are more significant, one targeted our area directly - an EO requiring the Secretary of Interior to legally change the name of Denali back to Mount McKinley. Perhaps this is not a particularly pressing national issue, and one that Alaska's Senators have opposed in the past. Still, there you have it - not a done deal but in the works.
